AUSTIN420: What inspired the overall vision behind BILLY CANNON’S Smoke & Ink and when did it come together?

TOMMY: The idea for Billy Cannon’s started with a few neighborhood guys wanting a smoke shop in our own neighborhood.  We wanted to focus primarily on local blown glass and really showcase the artists. For us, the shop needed to be more of a reflection of our community and of Austin as a whole. A collaboration of visions came together to make Billy Cannon’s Smoke & Ink.  When we opened the new shop in January of this year, adding tattoos, local art, and live music just naturally came together. Rather than just opening up another ‘cookie cutter’ head shop we strived to let it evolve naturally.

AUSTIN420: What kind of events does BILLY CANNON’S typically host and how has BILLY CANNON’S Smoke & Ink contributed to the community?

TOMMY: We try to have a variety of events and keep it fresh.  Musically, we’ve had everything from reggae to hip-hop, metal & country.  The open-mic night on Mondays, are a regular event on the calendar, we encourage everyone in our community to come and watch or participate every week.  Our recent comedy night special was an awesome night so we plan to have more in the future.  It’s also a great place to watch the game or just hang and use our wifi. We like to support charitable organizations in our community, and try to participate in as many beneficial efforts as possible. We have been honored to have been included in the efforts of many charitable organizations.  The two that stand out the most would be the Bastrop Wild Fire Relief Effort and the toy drive we organized benefiting SafePlace of Austin.

AUSTIN420: What sets BILLY CANNON’S apart from all other head-shops/tattoo shops in town?

TOMMY: Besides the customer service, we’ve always tried to be a socially conscious smoke & tattoo shop.  We use vegan-friendly ink in our tattoos, and we’ve never sold herbal incense or the ‘zombie-fying’ bath salts. We also sell 95% locally-blown glass.

AUSTIN420: How has the response been to “the shop” and what makes Austin so unique to a place like BILLY CANNON’S?

TOMMY: I think our customers enjoy the atmosphere, which is laid back and maintains an air of sophistication, while staying true to what we are trying to do.  We all live in and love Austin, TX.  Our shop has worked hard to be a reflection of Austin’s art and music culture.  Billy Cannon’s wouldn’t be the same in a city that didn’t have this kind of artist’s community.

AUSTIN420: Tell me of your 2nd Year Anniversary celebration and what you guys have in-store?
